Practice guitar scales position by position

Learn a scale one shape at a time, then connect the shapes up the neck. Pick a key, a scale and a position: each note lights up on the fretboard as it plays, with its name, scale degree and fret, and the TAB scrolls by underneath.

Scales and shapes

Minor and major pentatonic in the five standard boxes, the blues scale, the major scale, natural, harmonic and melodic minor, and the modes: Dorian, Phrygian, Lydian, Mixolydian and Locrian. Seven-note scales use three-notes-per-string shapes. Every key works, including open position.

How to practice a scale

  1. One position, slowly. Up and down at a tempo where every note is clean.
  2. Change the pattern to groups of three or four, or thirds, once it’s comfortable.
  3. Speed it up gradually. The tempo trainer adds a few BPM every few passes.
  4. Check yourself. Click Listen and every note gets a mark: on time, early, late or wrong note.
