Privacy and cookies

PennyGroove has no accounts and never uploads your videos. Here’s what stays on your computer, what’s sent, and to whom.

What stays in your browser

Your library and loops, any video files you open, your chord charts and scale exercises, your practice stats and your settings are all kept by your browser, for this site. A video file you open is copied into that storage so it’s in your library next time. None of it is uploaded anywhere.

Clearing this site’s data in your browser’s settings removes all of it.

Your microphone

Listen mode, the tuner, Find the note and Melody practice listen through your microphone. The sound is analyzed in your browser as you play. It isn’t recorded or sent anywhere, and the microphone is only on while you’re using one of them.

Google Analytics, only if you allow it

On your first visit, a small box asks whether PennyGroove can count your visit with Google Analytics. Until you press Allow, Google Analytics isn’t loaded at all: no cookies, nothing sent.

If you allow it:

  • It sets two cookies, _ga and _ga_ followed by a code, so a return visit can be told apart from a new visitor.
  • Google Analytics sees the pages you visit, the site that sent you, your type of device and browser, and roughly where you are. It works that out from your IP address, which it doesn’t store.
  • PennyGroove also notes when you start practicing in a tool (and whether it’s listening), open a lesson (a YouTube link or a video file), save a loop, or start the tuner.
  • It never gets the names or links of your videos, your chords, anything you type, or anything you play.
  • Google’s advertising features are turned off. PennyGroove keeps the detailed records for two months; after that only totals remain.

Google handles this data under its own terms. Google explains how it uses information from sites that use its services.

Your choice

Google Analytics is off.

Your answer is saved in this browser. If you clear this site’s data, you’ll be asked again.

Other services the site uses

YouTube. PennyGroove uses YouTube API Services to play lessons, in YouTube’s own player. When you open one, your browser asks YouTube for the video and its title, and YouTube may set its own cookies, under Google’s privacy policy and the YouTube Terms of Service. PennyGroove only saves the link and your loops.

Cloudflare hosts the site. To deliver each page and fend off attacks, it handles your request, including your IP address. PennyGroove itself doesn’t keep a log of visits.

Google Fonts. The fonts on these pages come from Google’s servers, so your browser fetches them from there.

Your data, your call

Depending on where you live, you have the right to ask what data is held about you, and to have it corrected or deleted. PennyGroove holds none of your practice data on its own servers: it’s all in your browser, and you can delete it yourself by clearing this site’s data.

Google Analytics data is held by Google. Turning it off above stops it from being collected, and removes the cookies that link your visits together. For anything else, or if you think something here isn’t right, email us. If you’re in the EU or the UK, you can also complain to your data protection authority.

Children

PennyGroove isn’t aimed at children under 13, and doesn’t knowingly collect anything from them. Nothing in the practice tools needs personal details from anyone.

Questions and changes

PennyGroove is a small independent project, made and run by Daniel Debela, who is responsible for this site’s data. For questions about privacy, or a request about your data, email hello@pennygroove.com. If you email, your address and message are used only to reply to you.

When this page changes, the date below changes too. If PennyGroove starts collecting something new, such as accounts, this page will say so before it happens.
